Movin' In

Today I'm thrilled to be volunteering to help the freshman class at my University move to campus. I love working in Development, but sometimes I miss being able to be directly involved with the students. Two jobs back, I did academic advising, and I really enjoyed bonding with my students and helping them plan their semesters, and listen to them when they were having difficulties. In Development, there's very little contact with students, aside from the occasional workstudy.

So today I'm going to meet the new freshman class, and help them get settled. I'm excited to be there when they go through this process, saying goodbye to their parents and families, meeting their roommates. Sure there will be some "helicopter parents," and some people who will be completely stressed out, but I'm thrilled to be a part of my community's welcome committee.

I remember moving in my freshman year, and think that if I could do it over again, I'd say hi to more people, be less shy, and definitely spend more time doing orientation activities than worrying about unpacking. Hopefully I can help these kids make the most of their first time at college.
