Free For All

I'm a huge proponent of equal access to education. And as someone who enjoys reading scholarly research articles, I'm very interested in the fact that Harvard is considering publishing its scholarly materials online--free of cost.

While there are many issues to grapple with on this--copyrights, publishing rights, and more--there is also the idea that anyone from graduate students to the interested hoi polloi would be able to learn about a range of topics without having to pay the exorbitant subscription fees of many scholarly journals. It would be a boon for high school students working on their first research papers; I can remember writing my first college-level paper and struggling to find material within my reach.

I'm sure there will be many hurdles to jump over in this process, but maybe in the next few years, we'll be able to have a look at the wealth of research that Harvard produces, instead of just hearing about the the wealth of their endowment.
